Saul Bass

Vertigo:
Saul Basses work uses many different visual elements and a variety of visualized elements. Saul Bass used these elements such as balance, colour, font and perspective. Saul Bass has also given the vertigo film poster an asymmetric font which gives an impression of an unbalanced text. Saul Bass maybe uses the lettering on the poster for a different reason for example; “the long down strokes” on letter “T” may reflect the character’s aggressiveness. Saul Bass has also used the colour red for the background; the colour red can also influence danger or anger. Whereas Saul Bass, on the other hand has used black and white, this is a total opposite to the colour red, used on the man above the woman on the film poster. The colour intensifies the danger whether the woman is being harmed or helped by the man either way there is danger. The vortex in the image also expresses some kind of movement in the poster which could be a clue to the viewer in the film. Saul bass also used to like stark designs, spirals, white and red and also really favoured the colour black which he used a lot in his work. I think the vortex looks like a nice design used because it keeps you focused on the whole poster and drags you into the image.

The man with the golden arm:
Saul bass uses a red font for the title which shows a dangerous look to the poster and gives an angered appearance to the film. Saul Bass has also used a bold textural font to make it bright and stand out onto the poster just to catch their attention. Saul Bass has used black blocks to separate the images and text. An image of an arm is also shown in the poster so that it relates to the title “golden arm”. Saul bass also has used a range of colours for example blue, red and lime. Saul bass has used a different type of font for the actors and actresses and also changed the colour of the font to yellow to make it stand out. I quite like the complexity and variation of the fonts that are used in the image. The colours used in the image e.g. blue, red and lime, shows different views and moods to the image and the characters the colours have been added to.

Anatomy of a murder:
Saul bass also created another movie poster called anatomy of a murder which included two different colours red and yellow. An inline font is used for the names of the people in the film on the poster to make it stand out. Saul bass used many designs of images to suit the film and the story line. In this poster he has used a body in black which represents murder. The text is carved into the image of the body which looks like it has cut into the body, this also could relate to the movie label “murder”. The most effective and most influencing part on the poster by Saul Bass is the tones of colours used and also the way the font has inline into the image and text to make it strand out on the poster. I really like Saul Bass’s work because it keeps me thinking on every piece of work that he has created to figure out what the image and designs is trying to show or what the point is that he is putting across.
